The New York Times has tested a new feature for Twitter users, which allows you to click on a highlighted piece of website text and Tweet it directly, rather than just sharing the title or headline.
If put into production this enhancement will allow website owners to define the portions of text in their articles that will be highlighted, allow users to to Tweet with just one click. The link will then take them straight to the relevant part of the article.
We think this could be really powerful stuff, drawing attention to the key parts of an article. According to data from Topsy the article that they used to test the new functionality was “tweeted 11 times more often that [sic] the average of the top 500 shared Times articles from the last month”.
Check it out for yourself on the Twitter blog.
