Why Low Carbon Matters
Going green is more than a trend; it’s a responsibility we all share. But here at Soto, it’s also personal.
When Zoey, our founder, was a tiny 8-year-old eco-warrior, she was out there picking up litter, writing to every environmental organisation she could find, and dreaming of publishing a book of poems to help save endangered animals (we’re still a bit bummed that didn’t happen). That passion for the planet never faded, even if life led her towards web development instead of environmental activism.
In fact, Soto is a way of merging those passions: crafting beautiful, high-performing websites while keeping our carbon emissions as low as possible. And that’s where Lowwwcarbon comes in.
Lowwwcarbon celebrates the best low-carbon sites on the web, highlighting those that are making the internet a greener place. We want to be part of that club, and we’ll go the extra mile to get there.
The Road to Lowwwcarbon
So, how exactly are we planning to get our Lowwwcarbon badge?
Well, it all starts at the very beginning: with hosting.
Hosting is the backbone of any site, and unfortunately, it’s also a massive contributor to carbon emissions. While our current hosting is green, we’re always looking for something better.
Enter 20i: A hosting provider we’ve been testing to see if it can help us meet our green goals without compromising on our ability to give our clients the speed they crave. We’ll be honest and tell you that it hasn’t quite been the walk in the park we’d been hoping for. 20i’s approach to SSLs has been a bit of a head-scratcher, and it’s taken us a little while to figure it all out. But we’re getting there.
At Soto, we’re a company that won’t settle for second best. And we certainly won’t compromise on performance just to tick a box. Our clients deserve sites that load at lightning speed and look amazing while still being kind to the planet, and we’re determined to deliver exactly that.

Not only did we craft a site that sent the right brand message and promoted trust and integrity, but we did it with a page weight of less than 510 KB. The result? A site responsible for just 0.378g of CO2 per page view…
… And yes, it achieved Lowwwcarbon status!
